How to Send a Secret Message in an Egg

A Visual Journalism illustration about Elizabeth Van Lew who worked for the Union during the American Civil War. She sent secret messages hidden in eggs with the help of Mary Richards Bowser who worked as a maid on enemy lines.

This illustration’s style was meant to eminate the oil painting styles that were popular at the time of the Civil War. The style is the orange underglazing that was prominent in many of the paintings made during that time.
